The Dorr Puma 8x56 is a low light binocular. Its big 56mm objective lenses give a 7mm exit pupil, so the view stays bright at dawn, at dusk and under a full moon, when smaller binoculars have already gone grey.
Exit pupil is the width of the beam of light that leaves each eyepiece. In twilight your pupils open to around 7mm, and the Puma 8x56 fills them completely. That is why deer stalkers, owl watchers and stargazers choose 56mm binoculars. Light transmission is over 87%.
8x magnification keeps the image steady in the hand, and the 117m field of view at 1000m makes it easy to scan a field edge or a patch of sky.
The magnesium alloy body is rubber armoured, sealed to 1m for 30 minutes and nitrogen filled, so the lenses will not fog inside when the dew comes down.
At 1025g the 8x56 is a binocular you wear on a harness or strap rather than carry in a pocket. For long sessions, the 1/4 inch thread under the focus wheel takes a tripod adapter.
For daytime walking and birdwatching the Puma 8x42 or the lighter Puma 8x32 are easier to carry. The Puma 10x42 gives more reach in daylight.
Binoculars, carry bag, neck strap, eyepiece and objective caps, and a cleaning cloth.
