The Dorr 60mm F2.8 Super Macro is a manual focus macro lens for Micro Four Thirds cameras that focuses close enough to show your subject at twice life size. It is a simple, well built way into real macro photography, whether that is insects in the garden, the texture of a leaf, or small product shots on the kitchen table.
Twice life size at 18cm
Most macro lenses stop at 1:1. This one goes to 2:1, so a 10mm beetle fills 20mm of the sensor, enough to show the hairs on a bee's leg or the scales on a butterfly wing. Closest focus is 18cm, measured from the sensor, which leaves only a few centimetres between the front of the lens and your subject at full magnification. Soft, even light helps a lot at this distance.
Manual focus made for close work
At 2:1 the depth of field is very thin, and autofocus often hunts. The Dorr uses a large, smooth focus ring instead. Many macro photographers set the focus ring and then rock gently forwards and backwards until the detail they want snaps into focus. Focus peaking and the magnified view on your camera make this much easier.
On a Micro Four Thirds camera
Micro Four Thirds doubles the effective focal length, so on OM System bodies such as the OM-5 and OM-1 Mark II, and Lumix G cameras such as the G9 II the lens gives a 120mm equivalent view. That is the longest reach of any version of this lens and gives you a little more room between lens and subject for the same framing. The lens has no electronic contacts, so turn on Release without Lens (OM System) or Shoot w/o Lens (Lumix) in the camera menu before you start, and set the aperture on the lens.
Metal build and 62mm filters
The optics are 9 elements in 7 groups with multicoating to control flare. The barrel is metal, the lens weighs 440g and it takes 62mm filters, so a polariser screws straight on. A drawstring pouch is included.
