  • Compact constant F2.8 aperture throughout the 16-50mm zoom range
  • Smallest F2.8 standard zoom in Tamron's current APS-C lineup
  • VXD linear-motor autofocus - fast, precise and near-silent
  • 16mm wide end for landscapes, interiors, group shots and vlogging
  • Close-focusing to 15cm for creative close-ups
  • Moisture-resistant construction with a fluorine-coated front element
  • Supports Tamron Lens Utility for custom functions and firmware updates

The Tamron 16-50mm F2.8 A is Tamron's most compact constant-aperture standard zoom for Sony E-mount APS-C cameras - a genuine step up from a kit lens for anyone who wants F2.8 brightness without the size, weight or price of a more advanced lens. It sits alongside Tamron's existing 17-70mm F2.8 Di III-A VC (which adds image stabilisation and a longer reach) as the lighter, more affordable option in the range.

Zoom range
16-50mm covers a 24-75mm full-frame equivalent field of view - wide enough for landscapes, architecture and group shots in tight indoor spaces, with enough reach at 50mm for natural portraits, street photography and everyday snapshots. A constant F2.8 aperture holds brightness throughout the whole range, so there's no loss of light as you zoom in.

Size and weight
At 79.6mm long and 305g, it's the smallest F2.8 standard zoom in Tamron's current lineup, built around a 55mm filter thread. It balances comfortably on compact APS-C bodies like the a6700 or ZV-E10 II without making the combination front-heavy, and its size makes it an easy lens to leave on the camera day to day.

Autofocus
Tamron's VXD linear-motor focus system drives fast, accurate and near-silent autofocus, tracking moving subjects reliably for both stills and video. The quiet operation is particularly useful when filming, where a noisy motor would otherwise be picked up by the camera's microphone.

Close focusing and bokeh
Minimum focus distance is just 15cm at 16mm and 29cm at 50mm, so you can fill the frame with a small subject - a coffee cup, a flower, a product shot - while keeping a wide, recognisable background. At 50mm, the F2.8 aperture and 7-blade circular diaphragm produce smooth, soft background blur for portraits and close-up detail shots.

Build and handling
The barrel uses Tamron's moisture-resistant construction, with seals around the barrel and a sealed USB-C port, plus a fluorine coating on the front element that resists water, oil, dust and fingerprints and is easier to wipe clean. A newly designed front cap has strap holes on both sides, so it can be tethered to the camera strap rather than pocketed or lost. Sony E-mount and Nikon Z-mount versions of this lens also support Tamron Lens Utility, letting you assign custom functions to the lens and update firmware yourself from a PC or the mobile app.

Who it's for
This is the lens to recommend to a Sony APS-C shooter (a6700, a6400, ZV-E10 II and similar) who's outgrown their kit zoom and wants a genuine jump in low-light performance and background blur without a big jump in size or cost. It particularly suits travel, street and everyday photography, and vloggers who'll appreciate the wide 16mm end for selfies and the quiet, reliable autofocus for video. If image stabilisation matters more to you than carrying a little extra size and weight - for handheld video or shooting without a stabilised body - Tamron's own 17-70mm F2.8 Di III-A VC is the lens to look at instead.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Tamron 16-50mm F2.8 A have image stabilisation?

No - this lens has no built-in Vibration Compensation (VC). It relies on in-body stabilisation if your camera has it; on a camera without IBIS there's no stabilisation for stills, though the fast F2.8 aperture helps offset this by allowing faster shutter speeds in lower light.

Is the Tamron 16-50mm F2.8 A weather-sealed?

It has moisture-resistant construction, with seals around the lens barrel and a sealed USB-C port, plus a fluorine-coated front element that repels water and oil. This isn't the same as full weather-sealing, so it's fine for light rain and dusty conditions but not for sustained heavy exposure.

What filter size does the Tamron 16-50mm F2.8 A use?

55mm.

What's the minimum focus distance?

15cm at the 16mm end and 29cm at the 50mm end, giving maximum magnification ratios of 1:4.5 and 1:4.8 respectively.

What's included in the box?

A flower-shaped hood, front cap and rear cap. The front cap has a newly designed strap hole on each side, so it can be tethered to your camera strap instead of carried loose.

How big and heavy is this lens?

It's Tamron's smallest F2.8 standard zoom to date. Exact figures vary slightly by mount: around 305g and under 80mm long for Sony E, Fujifilm X and Canon RF, and 315g / 81.6mm for Nikon Z, where the Z-mount's wider throat makes for a marginally larger lens.

What's the difference between this and the Tamron 17-70mm F2.8 VC?

The 17-70mm F2.8 Di III-A VC is longer, heavier and more expensive, but adds built-in Vibration Compensation and a longer zoom reach. The 16-50mm F2.8 A trades that reach and stabilisation for a noticeably smaller, lighter and more affordable lens - pick whichever trade-off suits how you shoot.

Does this lens support Tamron Lens Utility?

Yes - on Sony E and Nikon Z mount, it supports Tamron Lens Utility for both PC and mobile, letting you assign custom functions to the lens and update firmware yourself.

When will this lens be available?

It's available to pre-order now, with first deliveries due 29 October 2026.
