  • Compact constant F2.8 aperture throughout the 16-50mm zoom range
  • Smallest F2.8 standard zoom in Tamron's current APS-C lineup
  • VXD linear-motor autofocus - fast, precise and near-silent
  • 16mm wide end for landscapes, interiors, group shots and vlogging
  • Close-focusing to 15cm for creative close-ups
  • Moisture-resistant construction with a fluorine-coated front element
  • Supports Tamron Lens Utility for custom functions and firmware updates

The Tamron 16-50mm F2.8 A gives Nikon Z DX shooters a compact, constant F2.8 standard zoom with no current Tamron alternative on Z mount - there's no 17-70mm F2.8 VC for Z mount, so this is Tamron's only fast standard zoom for Z30, Zfc, Z50 and Z50II owners looking to move on from a kit lens.

Zoom range
16-50mm covers a 24-75mm full-frame equivalent range on Nikon's DX sensor - wide enough for landscapes, interiors and group shots, with a natural portrait length at 50mm. The F2.8 aperture stays constant through the zoom, so the lens doesn't lose brightness as you move from wide to telephoto the way a typical kit lens does.

Size and weight
At 315g and 81.6mm long, it's a little larger than the Sony and Fujifilm versions (a consequence of the Z-mount's wider throat diameter) but still compact enough to suit the small DX bodies it's built for, with a 55mm filter thread.

Autofocus
Tamron's VXD linear motor drives fast, precise, near-silent autofocus - good for tracking unpredictable subjects like kids or pets, and quiet enough not to intrude on video audio. The Nikon Z version supports Tamron Lens Utility over both PC and the mobile app, so you can assign custom functions to the lens's controls and update firmware yourself.

Close focusing and bokeh
Minimum focus distance is 15cm at 16mm and 29cm at 50mm, letting you fill the frame with small subjects while keeping a wide, usable background - useful for flowers, food or product-style shots. At 50mm, the 7-blade circular diaphragm and F2.8 aperture produce smooth background blur for portraits and detail shots.

Build and handling
The barrel has moisture-resistant seals throughout and a sealed USB-C port, plus a fluorine-coated front element that resists water, oil and fingerprints and wipes clean easily. A redesigned front cap includes strap holes on both sides, so it can be tethered to the camera strap instead of carried loose or left behind.

Who it's for
This is the lens for a Z30, Zfc, Z50 or Z50II owner who wants to move beyond their kit zoom's variable aperture and into F2.8 brightness and background blur, particularly for indoor shots, portraits and evening photography where a kit lens starts to struggle. Vloggers will appreciate the 16mm wide end for selfie-style framing and the Lens Utility support for assigning custom controls. There's currently no higher-spec Tamron alternative on Z mount, so this is the natural choice if you want a fast standard zoom for Nikon DX today.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Tamron 16-50mm F2.8 A have image stabilisation?

No - this lens has no built-in Vibration Compensation (VC). It relies on in-body stabilisation if your camera has it; on a camera without IBIS there's no stabilisation for stills, though the fast F2.8 aperture helps offset this by allowing faster shutter speeds in lower light.

Is the Tamron 16-50mm F2.8 A weather-sealed?

It has moisture-resistant construction, with seals around the lens barrel and a sealed USB-C port, plus a fluorine-coated front element that repels water and oil. This isn't the same as full weather-sealing, so it's fine for light rain and dusty conditions but not for sustained heavy exposure.

What filter size does the Tamron 16-50mm F2.8 A use?

55mm.

What's the minimum focus distance?

15cm at the 16mm end and 29cm at the 50mm end, giving maximum magnification ratios of 1:4.5 and 1:4.8 respectively.

What's included in the box?

A flower-shaped hood, front cap and rear cap. The front cap has a newly designed strap hole on each side, so it can be tethered to your camera strap instead of carried loose.

How big and heavy is this lens?

It's Tamron's smallest F2.8 standard zoom to date. Exact figures vary slightly by mount: around 305g and under 80mm long for Sony E, Fujifilm X and Canon RF, and 315g / 81.6mm for Nikon Z, where the Z-mount's wider throat makes for a marginally larger lens.

Is there a stabilised version of this lens for Nikon Z?

Not currently - Tamron doesn't make a 17-70mm F2.8 VC for Nikon Z mount, so the 16-50mm F2.8 A is Tamron's only constant-aperture APS-C standard zoom for Z-mount DX cameras right now.

Does this lens support Tamron Lens Utility?

Yes - on Sony E and Nikon Z mount, it supports Tamron Lens Utility for both PC and mobile, letting you assign custom functions to the lens and update firmware yourself.

When will this lens be available?

It's available to pre-order now, with first deliveries due 19 November 2026.
