Product Description

Sony 90mm Macro F2.8 FE Lens G OSS

Capture a macro world in full-size with the Sony 90mm Macro F2.8 FE Lens G OSS for E-mount mirrorless cameras. This medium telephoto macro lens has a 90mm focal length and close focusing distance of 0.28m, great for shooting macro images of flowers, insects, jewellery and more. Featuring a superb optical construction and optical image stabilisation for optimum image quality and handling in a variety of shooting conditions. As well as rapid autofocus and intuitive tools for precise focusing.

Lens Construction

The lens construction of the Sony 90mm Macro Lens is made up of 11 groups in 15 elements, including one aspherical lens element [1], one super ED (Extra-low Dispersion) lens element [2], and one ED glass element [3]. The arrangement of the lenses allows for optimum use of their technology; preventing spherical aberration as a result of close-focus, resulting in beautiful smooth rendering and clarity.

Macro Capabilities

With a close focusing distance of 0.28m, and maximum magnification ratio of 1.0x, the user can capture incredible precise detail of flowers, jewellery and insects. The DDSSM (Direct Drive Super Sonic wave Motor) system drives the two focus groups in a floating focus configuration to prevent aberration and ensure accurate positioning of the heavy lenses which makes the macro magnification possible.

Fast Autofocus

The DDSSM drives a fast, quiet, and accurate autofocus which is beneficial for recording movies and capturing animals/insects discreetly. The Sony 90mm Macro Lens features a focus hold button to lock focus at the current setting even when shooting continuous AF. Switch intuitively between auto and manual focusing whilst shooting by simply sliding the focus ring back and forth.

Including a Focus Range Limiter selector that can be set for near and/or far focusing which enhances autofocusing speed – 0.5m for distant focusing, 0.5 0 0.28 meters for close focusing, and FULL for full-range focusing.

Blur-free Images - OSS

The built-in OSS (Optical Steady Shot) image stabilisation gives the photographer the ability to shoot sharp macro photography without the need of a tripod. Driven by a responsive linear motor, the technology achieves blur-free images due to rapid, precise stabilisation.

Better Handling

With comfortable handling in mind, the internal lens elements in the inner focus design move during focusing to ensure the length of the lens does not change – leading to faster autofocus and shorter minimum focusing distance. When using a polarizing filter, the filter thread does not rotate.

Beautiful Bokeh

The maximum F2.8 9-blade circular aperture gives the photographer the ability to work with available light and control depth of field, making working in low light easy. As well as the creation of smooth blur in out of focus areas (bokeh).

Durable and Reliable

The Sony 90mm Macro Lens features a design that prevents dust and moisture from entering the lens, allowing reliable and consistent operation in a variety of shooting conditions.

I have found the Sony 90MM f2.8 Macro lens to be an excellent lens for both Macro work and short telephoto work (landscapes, portrait etc). It feels solid and well made and produces sharp images. At the time of writing this, it is probably the best AF macro lens available for the Sony E mount system.

Although the 90mm is bigger and heavier than the 85mm, the fact that this is a Macro lens makes up for that. The lens is very well made, feels solid and you don't need to be overly careful with it.

The picture quality is extremely sharp both in close ups but also when using this as a mid range telephoto lens. The bokeh is stunning too. This is on my top three list of lenses to use with my Sony alpha 7ii.
