The Sigma 56mm F1.4 DC DN Contemporary for Fujifilm X is a compact, fast short telephoto for APS-C cameras. It gives about an 84mm equivalent view, a natural length for portraits, and at 280g it is light enough to carry every day on an X-T5, X-S20 or X-M5.
Image quality
The optical design has 10 elements in 6 groups, with one SLD and two aspherical elements to control colour fringing and keep the image sharp wide open. Super Multi-Layer Coating reduces flare and ghosting, and the supplied hood helps further against strong backlight.
Portraits and bokeh
F1.4 and the short telephoto view separate a subject from the background very clearly, and the nine-blade rounded aperture keeps the blur smooth. It is also useful for low-light events, gigs and indoor sport where you cannot get close.
Autofocus and video
A stepping motor gives smooth, quiet autofocus that suits video, and the lens works with the camera's face and eye detection to keep a moving subject's eye sharp.
Size and build
It weighs 280g, measures 66.5 x 59.8mm and takes 55mm filters. The brass bayonet mount is sealed against dust and splashes. The minimum focus distance is 50cm, for a maximum magnification of 1:7.4.
Who it's for
This is for portrait, event and detail photographers who want a fast short telephoto that keeps the kit small. The X-T5 and X-S20 have in-body stabilisation; the X-M5 does not. For a wider standard view, pair it with the Sigma 30mm F1.4 DC DN.
