The full-frame SIGMA 24mm F1.4 DG DN Art is a high-performance, wide-angle prime for mirrorless systems. Available in L-Mount and Sony E-mount, it boasts a very wide F1.4 aperture, making it particularly well-suited to astrophotography as well as a wide range of photo or video applications where a wide angle-of-view and a fast aperture are beneficial.
The lens weighs in at 520g, making it about 30% lighter than Sigma’s existing 24mm F1.4, but it stills gains a range of important new features, including a manual aperture ring with de-click and lock functionality, a front filter thread and rear filter holder, and an all-new Manual Focus Lock (MFL) switch to fully deactivate the focus ring.
Optically the lens produces very sharp results at all apertures with well-suppressed optical aberrations such as sagittal coma flare. This combination of superb image quality, excellent portability and an advanced feature-set, all built into a beautifully constructed body, make this versatile optic well-suited to both professional imaging and casual everyday shooting.
The superb optical performance of the SIGMA 24mm F1.4 DG DN Art is powered by the optimal arrangement of its 17 elements, including two FLD, one SLD and four aspherical elements. The suppression of a range of optical aberrations such as sagittal coma flare, which cannot be corrected in post, contribute to the lens’s ability to accurately reproduce bright points of light even in the extreme periphery of the frame.
Other unsightly effects such as ghosting and flare are minimized, partly thanks to the use of Super Multi-Coating and Nano Porous Coating (NPC), helping ensure punchy, high-contrast results in backlit conditions.
The optical power of the 20m F1.4 DG DN to render clean and accurate images in any situation make it perfect for highly-demanding genres like astro, landscape and architectural photography.
Designed and manufactured at Sigma’s sole factory in Aizu in Japan, the 24mm F1.4 DG DN meets the exceptionally high production standards that users have come to expect from Sigma’s Global Vision lenses.
At 520g it is 30% lighter than Sigma’s existing 24mm F1.4, and about 16% shorter. This reduction in size and weight is thanks to design changes that have allowed more efficient positioning of internal parts, the development of more complex aspherical elements, and the freedom afforded by the short flange back distance. Considering the wide angle-of-view, bright maximum aperture and high optical performance offered by the 24mm F1.4 DG DN, it is a remarkably portable option that is easily small enough for everyday use.
The robust body is built from a combination of aluminium and Thermally Stable Composite (TSC), giving it a sleek finish, and the focus ring has a smooth, well damped action. A petal-shaped lens hood is included, and equipped with a lock mechanism to keep it securely fastened to the lens. A rubber grip makes it easier to attach and remove the hood.
Built with a dust and splash-resistant structure, a water- and oil-repellent coating on the front element, and a rubber seal around the mount, the 24mm F1.4 DG DN is safe to use during longer outdoor shoots.
The SIGMA 24mm F1.4 DG DN Art opens up endless possibilities to anyone who values high optical performance, versatility and convenience, from professional photographers to users who are new to wide-angle primes.
The SIGMA 24mm F1.4 DG DN Art is equipped with a range of features that make it easier to achieve professional-looking results. The lens boasts both a front filter thread and a rear filter holder, which ensures plenty of attachment options. Astrophotographers, for example, may want to attach a light pollution filter at the front and a soft filter at the rear.
A manual aperture ring is built in, which is de-clickable for a smooth transition between aperture settings – useful for changing exposure seamlessly when shooting video. The aperture ring also has a lock switch. A new Manual Focus Lock (MFL) switch completely deactivates the focus ring, ensuring the focus position won’t change if it is accidentally knocked. So for night-sky photographers, the days of using tape the hold the focus ring in position are over.
An AFL button is built into the lens, which can be customized to a range of different functions, and on the L-Mount version of the lens, it is possible to switch between linear and non-linear focus ring movement (USB Dock required). Film-makers will appreciate the fast yet near-silent autofocus functionality, which is driven by a stepping motor.
