The Nikon 85mm 1.8 G AF-S Nikkor Lens is a fast medium telephoto lens for use with FX-and DX-format SLRs. With a large f/1.8 aperture and classic focal length, this lens is a great option for portraiture, weddings or concerts. The 85mm focal length allows tight head and shoulder shots with great sharpness and colour contrast.
Even in low light, the Nikon 85mm lens continues to perform thanks to its fast aperture. At its wider aperture setting, the lens will help produce depth-of-field with natural background blur (Bokeh).
With Nikon’s Super Integrated Coating (SIC) element, the lens works to reduce flare and increase light transmission efficiency for superior colour consistency.
The Nikon 85mm lens has been engineered to deliver exceptional stills and HD Video. Featuring Nikon’s exclusive Silent Wave Motor, this lens converts “travelling waves” into rotational energy to help focus the optics. The Motor enables fast and near-silent autofocusing to ensure it is extremely precise and doesn’t affect the audio when shooting movies. Switch into manual focusing by simply turning the focusing ring on the lens even when looking through the viewfinder. Nikon have ensured there is no lag time between autofocus and manual focus so you can fine tune the details efficiently and seamlessly.
As an Internal Focus NIKKOR Lens, during auto focusing the lens does not change in size. This makes the Nikon 85mm lightweight and compact but capable of closer focusing distances.

I bought this lens recently after deciding to start using primes more instead of carrying a heavy 70-200mm 2.8 on every portrait session and wedding. The lens itself is bigger than my 50mm but I don't really notice the extra bulk or weight.
Quite frankly I'm annoyed with myself that I didn't do it sooner. Most of my other primes are good at f1. 8 but need to be stopped down to f2.2 before they are really sharp but at f1.8 this 85mm lens is very sharp and at f2.2 it is excellent.
The colour and contrast is amazing and even shooting into direct light I had no issues with flaring. The background out of focus areas are nice and smooth and due to the wide aperture and 85mm focal length the subject is nicely separated from the background.
I also tested this for AF accuracy, particularly with moving subjects (people walking towards or away from me) and it performed better than i expected with a very high keeper rate.
Overall I would recommend anyone considering this lens for portraits or weddings to go for it, I can't imagine not using it now, I may even consider another for my second shooter and ditch the 70-200mm altogether.
