  • About 72 photos from a 36 exposure roll
  • 22mm f/9.5 fixed-focus lens, sharp from about 1m
  • Single 1/100s shutter, so there is nothing to set
  • Built-in flash, powered by one AAA battery (not included)
  • Takes any 35mm colour or black and white film
  • Weighs about 100g, comes with a pouch and strap

The Kodak Ektar H35 in sage is a reusable half frame film camera in a soft green, one of Kodak's four nature-inspired colours. It takes ordinary 35mm film but puts two pictures in the space of one, so a 36 exposure roll gives you about 72 photos. That halves the cost of film and developing per shot, which matters now film prices have gone up.

How half frame works

Each picture is half the width of a normal 35mm frame. Holding the camera normally gives a portrait picture, so turn it on its side for a landscape shot, the opposite of most cameras. When the film comes back from the lab, many labs scan or print two frames side by side as a pair, which makes it easy to tell a little story in two pictures. Ask your lab for half frame scanning when you hand the film in.

Lens, shutter and flash

The H35 has a 22mm f/9.5 fixed-focus lens and one shutter speed of 1/100s, so there is nothing to set. Everything from about 1m to infinity is sharp. The built-in flash runs from one AAA battery. Turn it on to shoot indoors and after dark.

Which film to use

Any 35mm (135) colour or black and white film works. ISO 400 film is the safest choice with a fixed exposure, particularly in winter or on cloudy days. Kodak UltraMax 400 is a good place to start, and Kodak Gold 200 works well in bright sun. Film is not included.

How it compares

If you would rather have fewer, larger pictures, the Kodak M35 and the Yashica MF-1 both shoot full 35mm frames. Full frames give more detail for larger prints. The H35 gives twice as many photos for the same money.

Frequently asked questions

What does half frame mean?

The H35 puts two pictures on each normal 35mm frame. Each photo is 17 x 24mm instead of 36 x 24mm, so you get about twice as many from a roll.

How many photos do I get from one roll in the Ektar H35?

About 48 from a 24 exposure roll and about 72 from a 36 exposure roll. The exact number depends on how you load the film.

What film does the Kodak Ektar H35 take?

Any standard 35mm (135) film, colour or black and white. ISO 400 gives the best results because the shutter speed and aperture are fixed.

Does the H35 come with film or a battery?

No. Film and the AAA battery are sold separately. The camera comes with a pouch and a strap.

Can any lab develop half frame film?

Yes. The film is developed in exactly the same way as normal 35mm film. Tell the lab it is half frame so they scan or print each picture correctly.

Why do my H35 photos come out portrait?

Because the frame is turned on its side compared with a normal camera. Holding the H35 normally gives a portrait picture, and holding it on its side gives a landscape one.

What is the difference between the Ektar H35 and the Kodak M35?

The H35 shoots half frames, so you get about twice as many photos from a roll. The M35 shoots full frames, which give more detail for larger prints. Both are simple fixed-focus cameras with a built-in flash.

Is the sage Ektar H35 different from the other colours?

No. The sage H35 has the same lens, shutter and flash as the other colours. Only the finish changes.
