Canon EOS R8 Mark II: Full-Frame Freedom for Travel and Creative Video

Reach for the EOS R8 Mark II when you want full-frame image quality but don't want to carry a full-frame kit bag. It sits above the EOS RP and the original EOS R8 in Canon's range, and roughly alongside the APS-C EOS R7, but that full-frame sensor gives it the edge for shallow depth of field, low light and dynamic range.

The 24.2MP sensor and DIGIC X processor are joined by a genuine step up from the original R8: in-body stabilisation good for up to 7.5 stops, smarter Dual Pixel CMOS AF II subject tracking, and a new pre-continuous shooting mode that's already buffering frames before you've fully pressed the shutter. Add a redesigned, more comfortable grip, faster dual-band Wi-Fi with automatic cloud backup, and proper hybrid video credentials (4K oversampled from 6K, 180fps slow motion), and this is Canon's most complete small full-frame body yet.

Stabilised, fast, and hard to catch off guard

The original R8 had no in-body stabilisation at all. The Mark II fixes that, with up to 7.5 stops of 5-axis IS at the centre of the frame, so handheld stills in low light and handheld video both come out noticeably steadier. Switch to the electronic shutter and you're shooting at up to 40fps, with a bigger buffer than before: over 1,000 JPEG or RAW frames back to back. Pre-continuous shooting goes further still: half-press the shutter and the camera's already holding up to 20 frames from just before you committed, so the moment a kid, a pet or a wildlife sighting catches you off guard, you've probably still got it.

Autofocus that knows who to follow

Dual Pixel CMOS AF II tracks people, animals (dogs, cats, birds, horses) and vehicles across almost the whole frame, and works down to -7.5 EV, a stop better than the R8 in low light. A new Register People Priority mode lets you tell the camera which faces matter most, handy at a wedding, a party or a school sports day when the frame's full of people and only one of them is yours.

Video that holds its own

4K UHD up to 60p is oversampled from 6K for extra sharpness, and Full HD slow motion runs up to 180fps. Canon Log 3, PQ and HLG are all available through Custom Picture for anyone who wants to grade footage properly, and Movie Digital IS, four-channel audio and a 2.35:1 Cinema View crop round out a video toolset that doesn't feel bolted on.

Built to be carried, not just owned

Body-only weight is around 499g, close to an APS-C DSLR, and the redesigned grip and controls feel familiar from the first shot. 16 Colour Filters, plus Canon's full set of Picture Styles and LUT support, mean you can bake in a look you like rather than fixing it all in post.
