What is Blu-ray?

Blu-ray was developed for recording, rewriting, and playing back high-definition videos. It offers more than five times the storage capacity of standard storage systems. Blu-ray uses a blue/violet laser to read and record data, which has a shorter wavelength than the traditional red laser. This allows for greater accuracy and enables data to be packed more closely together, resulting in a higher capacity of 25 to 50 gigabytes. Most manufacturers anticipate that Blu-ray will eventually overtake DVDs and CDs, although it is unlikely to render them obsolete.
