Imagine a small, compact camera in a strong metal casing, with a high quality glass lens and fantastic light sensitivity. Well, the Russians saw its potential in 1982 and so were born the brand that is Lomography. The first camera off the production line was the Lomo LC-A and soon sold 1100 units a month in Russia, but not satisfied with just the home market, Lomography started to ship the cameras to the neighbouring Communist Countries, so that they could take advantage of the fantastic new camera. Everything carried on hunky dory, for the next few years until a group of Viennese students stumbled across the LC-A in 1992 and wanted everyone in their home town to know about the camera. The Lomo Society was born and Lomo exhibitions sprung up across Europe and in 1997 lomo.com was launched and Lomography went Global. The first world congress for Lomo was held in Madrid and 35,000 photographs were pasted to a wall 120metres long. Photokina was the next step and the range of cameras was extensively expanded to incorporate hundreds or new models and accessories.
We were there from the beginning. I remember taking delivery of the LC-A, its box which was surrounded in brown wax paper held with string and the dodgy smell from inside; things have moved on! We love the range, its original, individual and funky, it makes us smile on a daily basis and that must be good. From the Horizon to the Fisheye, the cameras are great to use and the Lomography family is growing every day. Film is not dead and continues to delight photographers who are patient enough to wait for the results. Christmas is always fun, as the range of accessories compliment the cameras beautifully, so go on, pamper to your wild side!
