Nikon adds to its impressive line-up of bridge cameras with the COOLPIX P950, which boasts an impressive 83x optical zoom. This robust superzoom camera updates the COOLPIX P900 with a range of sought-after features that make it exceptionally easy to capture distant subjects in extraordinary detail – in stunning close-up images and strikingly sharp 4K movies.
With its extensive reach, the COOLPIX P950 is the ideal companion camera for photographers who want to photograph birds or wildlife, or for keen aircraft spotters. The 83x optical zoom offers a focal length range of 24–2000 mm1, while the 166x Dynamic Fine Zoom digitally extends the upper limit to an incredible 4000 mm2.
Wildlife or bird photographers shooting at first light or at dusk get great results thanks to the bright NIKKOR lens with wide f/2.8 maximum aperture. Image quality is sharp, even when shooting at high zoom. Video shooters can record breath taking 4K movie footage of elusive subjects and users can adjust key exposure settings while filming, which is ideal in changing light. The COOLPIX P950 also supports RAW (NRW) image capture so users can make the most of advanced processing/editing programs. And a full-size hot shoe enables use of Nikon accessories like mics or scopes.

Not easy to find cameras in stock currently but located mine at Harrison Cameras online. Very simple purchase and kept informed throughout via emails.
I have to say that I am a little disappointed with the overall results produced by the camera. Not quite sure about the benefit of the Bird mode….I was looking to photograph some flying Terns at a local reservoir for practice as much as anything. That mode doesn’t help in those circumstances and I found the tracking facility simply unable to keep up with the birds. I had recently purchased an as new Sony RX10 M4 and the focus speed is beyond comparison. I also thought the additional zoom would be and advantage on the 950 and true you do get much closer than the Sony. However the sharpness drops away and any cropping in editing just makes this more obvious. I’m going to try it with a monopod to see if that improves the situation. That all said, I had a small Chiffchaff land helpfully on an open branch at the top of a tree and did get some nice shots helped by some post editing for sharpness. I definitely know which camera I’m holding by the weight and overall build quality, but it has to be remembered that the Sony costs approximately twice as much as the 950 so to be expected. To conclude I would say this 950 isn’t a ‘bad’ camera and maybe if I wasn’t comparing with the Sony I might’ve been happier with the result. I think it depends on what you’d like to photograph…stationery objects, architecture, the moon or just things way off in the distance, then you will have fun with this camera. Possibly a case of deciding what you’d like to photograph most, and buying a camera best suited for that purpose. It’s still always in my camera bag and I look forward to trying it for Street and architectural photo’s. I would certainly recommend it over and above the P1000 which just has way to much zoom to ever be sharp. Happy Snapping 😉
The camera is brilliant! The modes really help for someone like me that is still an amateur photographer. The image quality is fantastic and the zoom can't be beaten! The perfect bridge camera. I particular love the bird mode as I am a keen bird photographer - and any other wildlife really!!
