Product Description

The Sony Cyber-shot RX100 VA replaces the RX100 V in the market. The Sony Cyber-shot RX100 Mark VA replaces the RX100 V in the market. A number of changes and improvements have been made to the RX100 VA including improved image quality and AF performance as well as some additonal features and software changes.

The RX100 VA features improved high-speed processing performance with latest BIONZ X and Front-end LSI which increases the high-speed processing performance of BIONZ X by a factor of about 1.8. Advances in Detail Reproduction Technology achieve even finer reproduction of subject details for realistic depiction of textures and improvement of the image quality at high sensitivity shooting is thanks to controlling noise grain expression and highly realistic.

High Performance Eye AF

A significantly higher performance of Eye AF in subject detection speed, accuracy and tracking is also another key difference to this new RX100 VA as well as the heightened number of pictures at continuous shooting now at 233 from the 150 shots on the RX100M5. There is also a reduction of display time lag of the EVF during shooting thanks to the faster display system.

New features include; AF Area Registration, Face Detection AF/AE Settings, Switch Vertical & Horizontal AF Area, Ratings to Images and Protect and also it is now possible to assign the shutter button to start/stop movie recording.

Beautiful Background Bokeh

The ZEISS Vario-Sonnar T* 24-70mm f1.8-2.8 lens allows wide-angle shooting, and reduces camera shake and subject motion blur. Its fast f1.8-2.8 aperture allows you to capture photos such as portraits with beautiful background bokeh. It features ZEISS T* Coating to reduce ghost and flare. A 20.1-megapixel 1.0-type stacked SMOS image sensor with DRAM chip enables up to 90fps super-slow motion shooting and super-high-speed anti-distortion shutter up to 1/3200 sec – too fast for human eyes to perceive.

Furthermore, 315-point focal plane phase detection autofocus provides extraordinarily precise autofocusing and tracking performance. The RX100 V can perform high-speed continuous shooting at higher than 20MP resolution and up to 24fps with AF/AE tracking. In addition, the camera reduces blackout on the electronic viewfinder and LCD screen, and this reduction makes for smoother monitoring of moving subjects and easier shooting of fleeting moments.

4K Video Shooting

The RX100 VA can shoot 4K video (QFHD resolution: 3840x2160) with full pixel readout without pixel binning, collecting approximately 1.7 times as much information as is required for basic 4K movie output. The Photo Capture function lets you select a moment from a 4K movie in playback and save it in the form of a highly detailed still image file of over 8 megapixels. Fast Hybrid AF keeps images sharp and clear. Manual Focus (MF) Assist magnifies the area you are focusing on to enable more precise adjustment, while enhanced Peaking highlights the sharpest or most in-focus area with your choice of colour to help determine whether further focusing adjustment is required.

Advanced Image Processing

The RX100 Va features the high-speed BIONZ X processor for natural detail, realistic images, rich tonal gradations and low noise. It combines with The 20.1 megapixel Exmor RS® CMOS sensor with focal plane phase-detecting AF sensor to achieve such fast results. Plus up to 1/32000s Anti-Distortion Shutter minimises visual noise.

I bought this camera a month or so ago, having 'ummed and aahed' for close to a year. I have a DSLR and a Micro 4/3 camera, but I wanted something I could literally shove in a pocket, but that would give good photos and allow me a good degree of control over the process (ie, aperture priority, etc, RAW capability.) I wanted to be able to take it on winter hikes and be able to whip it out to take quick (but, hopefully, decent photos). I have to say, I've not been disappointed in the camera. It really is very good - and clearly deserves its reputation as the best point and shoot you can buy (albeit at a price). The autofocus is superb, the zoom lens responsive and the dynamic range is pretty good, especially given the size of the sensor.

This is a very capable camera in a surprisingly small package. The rendering of jpegs is 'interesting' in that I've never seen jpegs edited in camera to such a degree (compared to the RAW file), but that's no issue. Will it replace my DSLR or my Lumix GX7? Of course not, but it does very well for such a small package. My gripes are the standard ones: why, oh why, do I have to pay extra to get a grip for the camera which could so easily have been included (and which I'd not have to glue on myself)? Why do I have to pay for a battery charger? Surely, it's not beyond the wit of Sony to include what are really essential items as standard? When you're paying over £600 for a camera (even £900 for the Mk VII!) you shouldn't have to lash out another £80 (the best prices I could get for the two) for what are really essential items!

Finally, what do I say about the 'Imaging Edge Mobile' app (for, amongst other things, transferring photos to your iPad and phone)? Shockingly bad? A complete waste of time? Utterly useless? All of the above! May be I've been spoilt by Panasonic's 'Image App', but, sweet Jesus, the Sony offering is dire! I connected my camera the first time I tried to use it. Since then, I have had nothing but wasted hours of frustration! If this is the best you can do, Sony, here's some advice: don't bother! It really is not fit for purpose. So, overall, the RX100M5A is a great camera, in my view, but with a little more generosity (adding those essential 'extras' as standard) and some effort into that bloody awful App it could be even better - and it shouldn't be that difficult to make it warrant five stars; at present, I can only give four.
