High-speed Focusing  

The Voice-Coil Extreme-Torque Drive – VXD autofocus, ensures focusing performance is fast, precise, and quiet – beneficial when shooting moving objects that are near and far. The internal focusing system allows for better handling when shooting as it prevents the barrel from extending and rotating when focusing.  

A special feature of the Tamron 70-180mm F2.8 Sony is its ability to focus an object at 70mm with manual focus from a short distance of only 0.27m2. 

Preventing Optical Aberrations  

The lens configuration is made up of 14 groups and 19 elements, including LD (Low Dispersion) elements and XLD (Extra-low Dispersion) elements. The elements are arranged strategically to ensure they efficiently reduce chromatic aberrations and deliver edge-to-edge sharpness across the entire zoom range.  

A multi-coating technology named BBAR G2 has been applied to ensure images are clear with natural colours. It combats ghosting and flare when working in difficult light conditions, such as backlighting, to deliver uniform images no matter the lighting.  

Shooting Capabilities  

The minimum focus distance is only 0.85m, no matter the selected focal length, and the maximum image scale is 1:4:6 which is an advantage for capturing expressive close-ups with stunning detail.  

With a maximum f2.8 six-blade aperture, the user can capture a variety of perspectives in different lighting and achieve a lusciously smooth bokeh effect.   

Durable Construction  

The Tamron 70-180mm lens features a moisture resistant construction and features special sealing in critical areas, ensuring this lens is splash-proof and delivers consistent operation when working outside in challenging conditions. The front lens is coated in a fluorine coating to prevent oil, water, and other contaminants from sticking to the surface. If contaminants do become stuck to the surface, such as fingerprints or dirt, the coating allows the user to easily remove when on the go.  

The addition of the Zoom Lock mechanism ensures secure transportation by preventing unwanted extension of the tube when on the go. The lock is activated by a switch for efficient use.
